Licensed Building Practitioners

Licensed Building Practitioners (LBPs) are people, who through assessment, have shown they meet the standard of skill and competence in particular areas of building practice:

They include:

Designers (registered architects and chartered professional engineers are automatically treated as Design LBPs)
Carpenters
Roofers
Bricklayers and blocklayers
External plasterers
Foundations

There are separate licences for each of these building practitioners and licences recognise they are competent in their specialist areas (some trades people may have more than one licence).

It is the responsibility of the homeowner to check that the people they are using to do RBW have the relevant licence. LBPs can only complete RBW that they are licensed to carry out. It is important that homeowners check with them that they have the relevant licence before they start the work.

Registrations:
To find out if your local tradesperson has a licence visit the Department of Building and Housing website. To register a LBP to your building project, complete the relevant Auckland Council.

Notifications:
Your Restricted Building Work can only start when the name(s) of the LBP(s) involved in the initial construction phase have notified PBC or to council. The names of other LBPs who will be involved later in the work also need to be provided before their part of the work begins. Notifications will be required to be made prior to any inspections involving related RBW. To register a LBP to your building project, complete the relevant online form.
